Pillar one ยท Relaxing
Box breathing
Quiets the mind and puts you back in the room. This is the one used under pressure.
Watch
The pattern
- 01Take one ordinary breath in through the nose and let it go out of the mouth. That clears the decks.
- 02Inhale 5 seconds through the nose: belly, chest, head.
- 03Hold 5 seconds.
- 04Exhale 5 seconds through the nose.
- 05Hold 5 seconds. That is one cycle.
- 06Keep the count steady rather than long.
The number is only a frame. Four works, so does six, and you can move between them. What matters is that counting keeps your attention on the breath and off whatever is going on around you. Run it with the Ujjayi exhale once the count is easy.
Straining at 5 means start at 3. The evenness matters more than the number.
How it lands
The count is the point. Five numbers is just enough to hold your attention, and while it is holding your attention it is not on the room. Things get quiet from the outside in.
What it does
- Holds your attention on the count and off the room
- Settles the fight-or-flight response
- Slows the heart rate
- Steady enough to run in the middle of something
- Lowers blood pressure and brings inflammation down
